How Do We Talk About Issues That Matter?
We should talk about issues that matter unapologetically as it is very important to hear things to keep us updated in today's world. We must facilitate these discussions in order to seek out opinions from everyone on topics whether we are in and outside of the classroom. One quote that I really enjoyed from this module that ties in really well with this topic came from Hannah Arendt in "Men In The Dark Times''. She discusses her take on respectful and civil debates and more thought provoking ideas that follow what it looks like to disagree with someone and how to handle it properly. The quote I loved states "How can we seek out or listen to those who have different beliefs than our own? How can we ensure that our discussions are rooted in reliable information and that we treat each other with dignity and respect while discussing potentially contentious topics?". This quote sticks with me so much because I believe that this question isn't pondered enough. It is important to seek out opposite views because you will never grow in any subject if you stay within your own thoughts and not branching out to see what others have to say. Another significant point is to seek the ideas of others while being civil and respectful in your approach, otherwise you will not gain anything out of the process. In order to truly learn, you must do your research, look for any and all beliefs on it, and try to understand it in all ways to really know the topic well enough to form your own opinions. This is the best way to be respected by others who you may talk to about this, and it also serves as your chance to talk on "harder conversations" that can become a normalized area of speech. If you bring awareness to a subject enough, it doesn't have to hold that value of "difficult" to speak about. We need to expand our ideas and come together to help form judgements even if it means we don't always feel the same about something. Respect is key and that is the first step to any sort of interaction. Don't shy over uncomfortable topics, embrace them together!
