How Can Educational Philosophies Affect Schooling?
I believe that the way education philosophies affect schooling depends on the teachers themselves. I am sure when reading all of these theories, we all were fond with the idea of one or two of them and decided that teaching in those certain styles may be best. Although restricted by a school board or certain curriculum, teachers are given some freedom in approach on teaching different subjects. This is what will provide different experiences as students progress to new grade levels and different teachers. Some teachers will be drawn to teaching inspiration from one theorist, while the other one might be intrigued by the theory completely opposite to that one. This is the beauty of personal preference, but at the end of the day, we must look at what works best for the child.
We already know what traditional education looks like in the classroom, the typical desks and chairs, textbooks and standardized tests unit after unit, the whole ordeal. We know the outcome of what this style of teaching does to students. Some benefit from this and thrive in this setting, however this may not be the case for all students in the classroom, so what do we do? We must implement multiple styles within the classroom for it to be well rounded and ever-growing in curiosity to learn. If we stick too much to one theorists ideas, the kids who understand this type of learning will be okay to grow in this setting, however, for those who struggle to understand these ideas will have a harder time, and soon fall behind if not paid attention to. Having a classroom with multiple different theory styles can create a comfortable environment for more than just one type of student, and it also helps with the security factor that the student may feel within learning in this room. We need to do what we can to help our students be the best they can be, so we must provide a quality education that matches these ideas.
Hi Morgan! This blog is very well written! I really like how you mentioned a child's comfortability in the classroom because I was also making this connection during the module. I personally had a lot of anxiety when it came to standardized tests in the classroom, and therefore felt as though I could not do my best. I would've benefited much more from a different assessment style in a different teaching philosophy. That being said, you are absolutely right that we shouldn't just choose one philosophy to follow. In relation to our past module about teaching styles, we need to remember that each child has different needs, so multiple philosophies will benefit a classroom better than just one. Great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words. I have really enjoyed this module, because it has opened my eyes to a lot of things I never gave much thought to before. There is not one solid right way to teach, especially considering different students need different things from each other and their teachers. We really just have to do our best to accommodate and give these kids the chance at an amazing education, because they deserve it. I am a very anxious person, especially when it comes to test taking, so I can definitely relate to your experiences that you mentioned above, and feeling unable to be ready for these tests. I think that is a common occurrence among students to feel this way as well, and I think the more we come together and figure out a solution to this problem, the better the classroom setting will be for everyone.
DeleteHi Morgan, I agree, if students are constantly being exposed to one theorists ideas or one method of teaching, it wont gurantee success, we as teachers should be implementing different styles and ideas in our classroom, that will benefit the knowledge and growth of our students, rather than what we as teachers want. It is necessary that as teachers we provide a comfortable environment for the students, not just in how they learn, the teaching approach, but also what they learn, making sure that the ideas and lessons we teach are relevant and appropiate for our classrooms
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response Leah, I am glad we can agree on these topics. Each and every one of the students is different and unique in their own way, so we can't expect them to fall under one category in the education world. We must accommodate to these kids in order to have a more successful class altogether. It depends on us as a teacher, and the students themselves to work with each other to create a safe space with boundaries and rules. We have to be proactive in these areas to gain the positive results that we desire. The comfortability of the students is everything and I hope to be able to emulate equality throughout my classroom to help my students out. They deserve the best education and the best experiences in school. learning is a huge part of growing, and in this particular instance I believe that the teachers will grow just as much as the students.
