Why Teach?
I am inspired to teach because I was always the kid who was behind and not grasping the content. I always had trouble with school, and I envied those who didn't have to work hard to be a good student, or those who didn't have to try to be a quick adapting learner. I want to be the kind of teacher that is able to get through to any student on any subject, and allow them to have those wonderful light bulb moments when I teach. I especially want to help kids like me who struggled to the point of tears over schoolwork, I want to show kids like me that there is so much more to education than what is at face value. Being able to attend Texas State as a first generation college student, studying to educate the next generation is the first step to me following my dreams, and to making that little girl who felt like school wasn't meant for her a proud teacher of everything she didn't understand.
If given the choice, I would like to teach second or third grade because I feel like they just get me. I coach cheerleading for young girls in the fall and spring for a local organization in my town, and every year that I have participated, I just feel like those two grade levels learn best with my teaching styles, and I feel as though I am able to get through to them quicker than my littles or bigs. I am working on getting better with teaching the younger and older crowd, this is only my second year there, but the middles seem to just understand me in the way I want all of the kids to. Cheerleading was a big passion of mine in high school, so being able to pass on everything I learned there and mentor it onto the next group of future cheerleaders is such a rewarding feeling, I am so excited to be able to do this with teaching content in classrooms as well. My favorite subjects in school were English and History, so If I was able to teach either, it would be that much more thrilling for me. I would also enjoy teaching fine arts, as I like the idea of expressing oneself through creativity.
Your BLOG reveals so much about how interesting you are as an educator. It makes me want to engage in a conversation with you.
ReplyDeleteI love how you talked about your educational background, I think when you express your struggles in school with your students, they are going to feel so comfortable with you and they are going to express their struggles with their learning easier with you. I also admire that even though you had a hard time in school you want to go back and be that source of comfort to students, very cool!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kindness! I look forward to connecting with my students in a way that shows them that even the teacher isn't perfect and all knowing. I find that students who see this and know that even their teacher struggled with the same topics that they are learning now, it will help them feel less alone in the educational world. I hope to be able to show them that hard work and practice will make all of the difference and that they can overcome challenges as long as they put their heart and soul into it.
